This conference will focus on Infection Prevention and Patient Safety topics, including but not limited to: Antimicrobial Resistance, Antibiotic Stewardship, Sterilization, Disinfection, Sepsis, Adverse Surgical Events including Fires, Patient Safety Tools and PSOs. PSO’s: Reconciling Protection with State Mandatory Reporting
Kathy Wire, JD, MBA, HCPRM

This session will review the Patient Safety Quality Improvement Act and the basic purpose and structure of Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs) and the legal protections they offer. Methods to comply with mandatory reporting of adverse events to a state agency and participate in a PSO to maintain the full privilege and confidentiality protections afforded under the federal Patient Safety Quality Improvement Act will be described. The 2017 requirements for hospitals with > than 50 beds will be discussed.
