Providers who do patient safety work well need to develop and implement the right solutions.  One of the first reactions is often “Make a new rule that tells people not to do this anymore.”  Unfortunately, this approach fails for two reasons.  It irritates the staff members who are doing things right, and it gives those who need to improve room to think that they are OK.  In a thoughtful article, Merge Gupta-Suderji calls this approach “whitewashing,” and describes the problems with the approach.

She also suggests the more effective alternative, that deals directly with those who need to improve, as well as how to overcome hurdles that arise with that approach.
