Basics of CUSP

Basics of CUSP – (Password protected page)

The Center for Patient Safety, in partnership with the Missouri Hospital Association, are working with hospitals to implement the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP). Developed by researchers at Johns Hopkins University, CUSP is a safety culture program that is designed to educate and improve awareness about patient safety and quality of care, empower staff to take charge and improve safety in their workplace, create partnerships between units and hospital executives to improve organizational culture, provide resources for unit improvement efforts, and provide tools to investigate and learn from defects. The unit-based team uses a structured process that is ideally integrated into an organizational strategic plan, while deferring to the local wisdom of front line staff members who prevent safety hazards every day.

The goals of The Basics of CUSP are as follows:

  1. Implement a CUSP team on at least one unit
  2. Administer a patient safety culture survey on the unit; create and implement a culture improvement action plan
  3. Learn from one defect on the unit using tools from the CUSP toolkit
